IMPORTANT NOTES
|
Swain Brook campground's nature park is located on the south side of Sentinel Mountain, in the southwest section of the White Mountain National Forest. The Nature Park contains 352 acres of forest land ranging in elevation from 650' to 1290'. The summit of Sentinel Mountain is approximately 2,200 feet above sea level.
The nature park includes 4 miles of maintained hiking trails leading to several viewing areas, cascading waterfalls, water holes, rest areas and wildlife (if you walk quietly). The featured picturesque scene was taken from Paul's Hill, a U.S. geological survey benchmark (el. 1169'). The large mountain to the left is Mount Moosilauke (el. 4810'), with Carr Mountain (el. 3470') to the right. The Baker River Valley, not pictured, can also be viewed from Paul's Hill, in a southerly direction.
Swain Brook, the largest of 5 mountain brooks, drops 520' in elevation over its 1.6 mile stretch within the camping area and nature park. Most of the cascades and water holes in the nature park are located along Swain Brook. Unlike most pasture brooks, Swain Brook's water holes have stone and /or gravel bottoms, so there are no leaches or muck. We do advise wearing water shoes or sneakers when entering the brook.
The nature park is open from 7:00am to dusk for registered campers and their registered guests. The park is not open to the general public.
